I’m Ellen, a Northern Irish trans youth worker, wheelchair/bicycle nerd and cat lady. I’m the founder and current chairperson of GenderJam NI, and have been campaigning since April 2013 for the rights of trans & non-binary people in Northern Ireland. I’m a director for SAIL NI and my job title is “Youth Support Coordinator”, so I annoy schools and the NHS on behalf of trans folk for a living.
I ran in the Northern Ireland Assembly elections in May 2016 as the Green Party in Northern Ireland candidate for West Belfast. I’m also running in the March 2017 elections for the same Assembly. It’s been an interesting year.
I’m also a board member of Cara-Friend and a consultant on trans youth issues to several public and statutory sector bodies.
I’m physically disabled (chronic pain and fatigue condition), autistic and have a history of serious mental illness. I’ve found room in my life to get involved with autistic and disability advocacy communities also, and am particularly interested in the accessibility of public spaces – in Belfast especially.
I’m fascinated by transport engineering, bicycles, cats, Minecraft, railways, Belfast’s history, and plenty besides. If you’d like to nerd out about any of these, I’d love to hear from you.
